Weekender: St. Augustine, Florida

Last minute trips are sometimes the best ones. And last minute beach trips take the cake. For this whirlwind adventure, I went to meet my mom and sister in Florida to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousin. It just so happened that this trip worked out for all people involved– how much better can it get?

I have been visiting Saint Augustine since I was little. It is a great place full of magic and wonder for little kids. Pirates, castles, beaches, wildlife, and a historical presence everywhere makes this spot really family friendly. Now that I am an adult, I have not been able to visit in many years and am so excited to share what wonderful experiences Saint Augustine has to offer.

Among many of the fantastic places  to eat in St. Augustine is the Blackfly Restaurant. It is a new favorite. All local ingredients and fresh seafood makes this a real gem. We ordered two  appetizers, one was the spinach and cheese pot which was a really great chip and dip plate, we also got the steak and risotto cake app which was absolutely fantastic. Somewhat small to share with more than two people, but I would order it again if I ever had the chance.

For entrees, we sampled four different options and each were magnificent. Thai shrimp and crab cakes were luscious and fantastic. The mixed seafood grill was topped with a perfect and slightly spicy tomato sauce that made this dish shine.

The steak with truffle butter was accompanied by the most fantastic and velvety mashed potatoes and a trio of veggies. Basil pesto crusted catch of the day was one of the best things I have eaten in a long time.

Anything on the menu sounded out of sight and I can’t wait to go again! Also, next time I am saving room for tropical fruit creme brûlée. I am still upset that I missed that chance.

Another new favorite is Hyppo Popsicles located several places downtown. The staff were really friendly, they were knowledgable about their product, and the popsicles were YUMMY we tried gin pear, sangria plum, strawberry basil, and pumpkin cheesecake. Everyone really enjoyed this cool treat on such a sunny day. If you are walking around downtown, stop in for a sweet Popsicle. You won’t be disappointed!

Clearly, Florida is known for its beaches. Saint Augustine lives up to the costal Florida expectations of beautiful beaches. But other than the beach, there is so much more to do in this small city.
We went on a kayaking adventure through Eco tours based at the marina. This was by far one of the coolest things I have done in a long time. The kayak was a two-seater and allowed my mom and I to enjoy some time together. A private guide showed us so much wildlife and pointed out things I would have never noticed. We saw so many birds, sea turtles, fish, plant life, and were able to feel like we were far away while on a two hour adventure.  Anyone ready for a workout that is incredibly enjoyable, ocean kayaking is your best bet! http://www.mobi.staugustineecotours.com

It has been far too long since I have visited this charming city. I cannot wait to continue to explore it on my next trip.
