Book Club: Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan

If you are like me, you need some good reads every once in awhile. On my days off, there is really little that I love more than to relax outside with a good book. Vacation season is coming up and this is a MUST PACK for travel reading. I have so many wonderful things to say about Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan . It is not only incredibly well written, it is a medical miracle that the author was even able to tell her story.

Without giving away the entire plot, the story is a real life first-hand account of a young previously normal young woman’s slip into unabated psychosis. She was for all intents and purposes crazy and it took some medical insight, the work of a large team, and some personal strength to pull her out of her psychotic spiral.

Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan is truly one of the best books I have read in a long, long time. As a nurse, I obviously find medicine very interesting, but this was not only interesting…. it was captivating. Personal stories of real life events are among some of my favorite things to read, but this novel goes beyond that. It is punctuated with actual medical charting, vivid research, and a clearly unique point of view which makes it an incredible read. I could not suggest it enough.

If you enjoy medical stories, personal biographies, psychiatry, or just great reads I would totally suggest picking up this book. Its available everywhere, but here is a link to purchase it at Target.
